Thoroughly Thursday - The "Getting The Hang Of It" Edition

"This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursday."
- Douglas Adams (via Arthur Dent)

Welcome to Thoroughly Thursday - "The Getting the Hang of It" edition.

Happy End of Summer! For some of you, summer has several more weeks (maybe till Labor Day?) but for my house summer ended yesterday with my munchkins returning to school. So, welcome to Autumn (in August).

What I'm Reading -
I'm a big fan of future studies and love to envision the coming decades with self-driving cars and personal jet packs. Currently, I'm reading Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari. His book talks about the opportunities and challenges that we'll see through medical and technological advances in the coming decades and it's amazing. If the author sounds familiar, Harari's previous book Sapiens was a hit with former US Prez Obama.

What I'm Watching -
I'm notoriously fickle when it comes to TV, and aside from watching Steven Universe with my eldest daughter, I usually can't talk about shows. However, I did just finish watching Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Originally a series of books by Douglas Adams, BBC America created an entirely original, deeply weird series set in Vancou-Seatt-land. It's got Frodo (Elijah Wood), the CIA, energy vampires, time travel, soul swapping, and a guy a steampunk Iron Man suit. But, holistic assassin Bart Curlish is worth the price of admission.

What I'm Listening to -
When I'm trying to work, I've started to listen to a lot of jazz music. I can't really say that I'm well-versed but someone recently introduced me to Eddie Henderson and I can't stop listening. It's like Miles Davis and Sun Ra came together and gave birth to a trumpet-playing, psychedelic lovechild. Also, check out Milt Jackson because he's amazing too.

What I'm asking -
How do I work for future goals while being present and receptive to current opportunities?

What I'm Doing (for work) -
Setting up a webinar about incorporating mindfulness practices at work. There is lots of research that shows that incorporating mindful practices at work can have a profound effect on employee relationships and productivity. Unfortunately, many managers and executives get confused on how to implement such ideas. If you are interested in how to bring mindfulness into your work or office, join me as world-class instructional designer Julie Winkle Giulioni presents Mindful Leadership: It's Not All About Meditation, a free hour-long webinar on September 12th, 2017, Noon Pacific. She'll highlight specific actions organizations can use to leverage mindfulness and make it part of the fabric of a company culture.

All the best, and remember, tomorrow is Friday. :)
