Thoroughly Thursday - the "Essentialism" Edition

Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday, the "Essentialism" edition. One of the worst habits I have is that I hate to say no to myself (shiny things!!) or others. That has meant in recent years that I have a tendency to try to do too much. I've read Greg McKeown's book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less twice, but I have a tendency to backslide. However, if I want to do more TT things I'm going to have to stop spending hours organizing my email and prioritize. I'm trying folks.
What I'm Reading -
Like many people, I have an evolving love-hate relationship with social media. I used to be concerned that I was wasting too much time with it. Now, I'm equally afraid that one of my bad jokes (as you may have noticed, I tell many bad jokes) will be taken the wrong way. This last week I've been reading So You've Been Publicly Shamed... by Jon Ronson (am I the only one who says Ron Johnson in their head when they read his name?). Ronson starts with the admission that the power of the social internet to uncover injustice or give a voice to the dispossessed has mutated into a public shaming mob that often has ethically questionable motives when attacking people. He covers several high-profile episodes such as Justine Sacco (the PR exec with the terrible "Africa-HIV" joke), but the story of Jonah Lehrer's plagiarism and his cringe-worthy public apology (try giving a speech when a real-time Twitter feed eats you alive) had me glued to my Kindle.
What I'm Watching -
My family and I have been watching "The Good Place" recently. As a general concept, you would think this would be interesting as a short mini-series or reccurring SNL skit. I remember watching the first season and finding it hilarious, but wondering how they could keep the show interesting. We're into Season 2 and I'm still laughing. Of course, it helps that both Ted Danson and Kristin Bell ooze charm by the bucketful.
What I'm Listening to -
"Why We Sleep" via Fresh Air with Terry Gross. For years, I thought that a sign of a hard-working person was that you trained yourself to sleep less (ie. I spent much of my 30s in a sleep-deprived fog and not always because of my kids). Sleep researcher Matthew Walker talks about our many, many misconceptionsabout sleep, how sleep-deprivation is a big factor to nearly all chronic illnessesand how lack of sleep can lead to Alzheimer's. He has a book of the same name, which I haven't read, but you can find here.
What I'm thinking about -

What I'm Doing (for work) -
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I'm going to be presenting a workshop at the International Security Conference in New York on Nov 15th. The workshop is called "You Told Them We Could Do What?" and is about getting sales agents and installation teams to build better communication strategies. I'm looking forward to being back in NYC and to see my friends Diana and Tom. Currently, I'm trying to figure out the handouts for the workshop. Any thoughts?
