Thoroughly Thursday - the "King George III - Da da da dat da dat da da da da ya da" Edition
"This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursday."
- Douglas Adams (via Arthur Dent)
Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday, the "King George III - Da da da dat da dat da da da da ya da" Edition. I have a bit of a moral quandary. Earlier this week, my daughter was (borderline) sick. She rarely misses school, so I suggested that she skip a day and miss the math test that was worrying her. But, I said, use the sick day for an extra day of studying so you can ace the test when you return. She looked at me and said, "But, that's cheating." "No, it isn't," I said, "you're (sorta) sick. It's a tactical delay."
So, is it cheating or not cheating? Let me know what you think.
What I'm Reading -
The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More by Chris Anderson, former Managing Editor of Wired Magazine. It has been on my reading list for awhile and I had liked one of his other books, Free: The Future of a Radical Price which I think is required reading in the era of inbound and nurture marketing. Written in 2006, "The Long Tail" was immensely prescient of our current world with niche choices and hyper-focused preferences. Sadly, however, his interpretation of how we would respond to these opportunities seems hopelessly naive:
“Although the decline of mainstream cultural institutions may result in some people turning to echo chambers of like-minded views, I suspect that over time the power of human curiosity combined with near-infinite access to information will tend to make most people more open-minded, not less.” - Chris Anderson
If only, Chris. If only.
What I'm Watching -
I have been an enormous Blade Runner fan since I was in high school. My enjoyment of the movie shifted into a (probably-not-so-healthy) obsession in my 20s. I like to think that I've matured a bit since having children, but after seeing Blade Runner 2036: Nexus Dawn, a short prequel to the upcoming Blade Runner 2049, it is safe to say I'm a tiny bit excited. Blind, bearded Jared Leto looks awesomely evil, even if he spouts poetic nonsense. Seriously, why can't Oct 6th get here already?
What I'm Listening to -
Lin Manuel Miranda. By a lucky turn of events, my eldest daughter had the opportunity to see "Hamilton" here in Los Angeles with some friends. So, for the price of a moderately-priced plane ticket, we were able to send her. She came back vibrating with delight, so I suppose it was worth it. Since then, we've had a steady audio diet of "Alexander Hamilton" and "My Shot" among others. More importantly, I've determined that I sound amazing singing "You'll Be Back" (sung by King George III in the musical), though I'm not sure if my family agrees.
What I'm thinking about -
"Only the good die young" - Billy Joel (because, you know, it's Billy Joel)
What I'm Doing (for work) -
