Thoroughly Thursday - the "Independence Day" Edition
Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday, the Independence Day edition. After several days of traveling, I was completely willing to sleep through most of the early activities of the 4th (community pancake breakfast, patriotic outfit walk-off, the parade). Sadly, my family had other ideas. However, the fireworks were beautiful. I hope you had a wonderful Independence Day!
What I'm Reading - It's Not Just About Making Your Bed
In 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven gave a commencement address at the University of Texas at Austin. The video went viral as the "Make Your Bed" speech. The Admiral, a lifelong Navy Seal, created a short book called (duh) Make Your Bed, which I had a chance to read this week. It covers the 10 principles that McRaven learned from his Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training that helped him in his career. Aside from "make your bed", there are principles like "don't back down from sharks", "get over being a sugar cookie" (it's worse than it sounds), and of course, "never ring the bell". Easy to understand and entertaining, though I did find myself thinking, "Am I too old to be a Navy Seal?" (short answer: YES).
What I'm Watching - It's All Connected
In the very first Thoroughly Thursday, I mentioned how much I had enjoyed Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Well, I had the opportunity to watch Season 2 this last few weeks. I think part of what I really liked about it the series, which sadly won't be renewed for Season 3, is just how unconventional the entire series is: the plots are ridiculously over-complicated, the hero is an effete weirdo, and the tone ranges from comedy to surrealist David Lynch film back to violent black comedy. I will miss it terribly.
What I'm Doing - Rallying for Families
On Saturday, my oldest daughter and I were able to attend the "Families Belong Together" rally in Downtown Los Angeles. The event had a huge turnout, and I realized this is the 5th rally/march I've been to in 18 months. Prior to 2017, I had been to none. I mentioned to my daughter that we were living in an important time of political activism in our country. Most activism was on the fringes when I was younger, usually hippies wanting to legalize pot on my college campus. She mentioned that she was now considering pursuing political science as a minor in college. You can see my video of the rally here.
What I'm Thinking About - Being Our Best Selves
"May we think of freedom not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right." - Peter Marshall
All the best, and remember, tomorrow is Friday. :)
