Thoroughly Thursday - the "Now With Video" Edition

Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday - the Now With Video Edition. Its been eventful few days in our neck of the woods. Like much of the rest of Netflix-viewing world, my family watched Tidying Up with Marie Kondo over the last week and then decided to throw out most of their worldly possessions. As most of you know, I'm a fan of MK, but the permanent piles of discards outside my daughters' rooms and the arguments of who is responsible for taking everything to the garage/Goodwill/Giant Pit of Eternal Darkness (um, me, I guess) makes me wonder if I was better off when they were binging The Office.

What I'm Reading - So, are you LinkedIn?
This last few weeks, I've been devouring books on networking (the people kind, not the electronic kind). My focus has been less on the in-your-face-with-a-business-card-while-holding-a-plastic-cup-of-wine skills, but techniques to establish and maintain healthy, positive business relationships (while-holding-a-plastic-cup-of-wine). In the last few weeks, I read Build Your Dream Network by J. Kelly Hoey, while also re-reading Keith Ferrazzi's uber-popular Never Eat Alone. My key takeaway has been that while not exactly like trying to make friends, creating a business network share many of the same features:

  • don't be a jerk

  • be genuine

  • be proactive in your generosity

  • develop relationships before you need them

Not bad advice for life in general, I think. The challenge with building a network is not in what to do, but remembering to do it.

What I've Been Listening To - Alt-Rock Trio of Troubadours
On the recommendation of TT-friend Jon, this last week I checked out boygenuis, an EP by alternative wunderkinds Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker. The story is that the three independent artists were touring together and decided to collaborate on a series of songs. Within a few days, they had the six songs that make up this album. The fact that all three are under 25yrs old makes me feel a) we'll be hearing much more from each of them in the years to come, and b) really old. I highly recommend you check them out here.

What I've been Doing - Trying Something New
I've decided to start adding a new feature to TT. Much of my creative work recently has been in video, so I'm setting a goal to feature an original short film each week for Thoroughly Thursday. This last weekend, I was able to interview several participants during the 3rd Annual Women's March in Los Angeles and pulled it together into a 2min video. (Just FYI, parts of it are mildly PG-13.)

All the best, and remember, tomorrow is Friday. :)
