Thoroughly Thursday - The "Snuggie" Edition
Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday, the "Snuggie" edition. Last week, we in Los Angeles celebrated Thanksgiving with temperatures in the 90s. However, as of Monday it suddenly became frigid at night. We went from sleeping with barely one duvet to sleeping with a duvet and three wool blankets. It's cozy, but I'm ready for the weather to stop acting out the Misersfrom the "Year Without Santa Claus" and settle down.
What I'm Reading -
One of my favorite overly-intellectual books as a teen was "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco. I was also a big fan of the movie with Sean Connery. I'm listening to it as an audiobook this time, which is infinitely easier (though I can't pretend to understand the various Latin phrases that are tossed around). When I read it in high school, I identified with Adso, the narrator who recounts the events as a young medieval novice monk. Now, I'm nearly the same age as William of Baskerville, the story's protagonist, who in 14th Century Italy was considered an old man. Not sure how I feel about that.
What I'm Watching -
Over the weekend I watched "Obey Giant" the documentary on artist Shepard Fairey currently on Hulu. From street artist with his ubiquitous images of Andre the Giant to designing the Obama Hope poster to potential convict to now world-renown artist, Fairey is an interesting example of a counter-cultural figurethat has been incorporated into the mainstream. Additionally, he has a show currently in Los Angeles which I really enjoyed. I've posted a photo essay from the show and should have a video about it online in the next day or so.
What I'm Reading (article) -
Bully and the Buddhist - I'm not sure exactly who recommended this article but I really love it. Wired editor Eric Steuer chronicles reconnecting with his childhood classmate and bully who grew up to lead the Dharma Bum Buddhist Temple in San Diego. It's a wonderful story about personal change, perspectiveand how sometimes old wounds can affect us long after we think.
What I'm Listening to -
Bjork's latest album Utopia that came out over the weekend. This new albumseems to be a companion piece to her 2015 Vulnicura. Where Vulnicura was about the loss of her relationship to artist Matthew Barney, Utopia seems to be about the possibilities that come after. It's filled with long, loopy soundscapes filled with flutes, nature sounds and techno samples throughout. We are a long way from simple pop songs like Human Behavior, but if you're open to it, it's pretty amazing.
What I'm thinking -
Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others. - Marcus Tullius Cicero
What I'm Doing (for work) -
You might be thinking right now "I want to give charity gift cards for my friends for the Holidays but don't know how. How does someone even do that?!" No worries! DTG worked with the amazing Charity On Top to create a new short animation on how to painlessly order a gift card (1min30sec). Once you see how easy it is, feel free to go to their site here.
All the best, and remember, tomorrow is Friday. :)

P.P.S. It's Holiday Party season - remember to be careful out there.
