Thoroughly Thursday - the "Summer Scrub" Edition
Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday, the Summer Scrub Edition. In preparation for my oldest's graduation next week and our respective families visiting, during the last few days, I've been hard at work doing chores. I have figured out the paint color in the guest bedroom for touch-ups and replaced the exterior floodlights. I have cleaned behind the stove (Oh, God!) and under the refrigerator (you really don't want to know). Unfortunately, the garage (which currently looks like that final scene from Citizen Kane) will probably need to be sealed off with HazMat tape, but otherwise, we're looking pretty good. 👍
What I'm Watching - Grass Roots in the Bronx
This last week, I saw Knocking Down the House, a documentary on four women across the country who decide to run for political office for the first time. Though backed by Brand New Congress, a Democratic campaign organization, each candidate is essentially running against entrenched incumbents who have lost touch with their local communities. Filmmaker Rachel Lears follows Cori Bush in Missouri, Paula Jean Swearengin in West Virginia, Amy Vilela in Nevada as each develops a platform and builds a following in their respective races. However, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose charisma and star-power electrified the nation, is the real star of the film (Spoiler: she won). Each candidate's policies are progressive, so if you squirm at shouts of Medicare for All and increased environmental protections to coal miners, you may want to sit this one out. Otherwise, you'll be inspired and motivated by what you see.
What I'm Listening To - Voices in the Dark
This last week, I've descended into Billie Eilish's new album WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP... WHERE DO WE GO? Eilish's music had been a staple in our house playlist for months before I started to pay attention to both the lyrics and production value. She is the same age as my kids 🤯 and sounds like the artistic love child of 90’s musical darlings PJ Harvey and Tricky. Her music is quirky and dark and makes me think her favorite pastime is eating pizza and watching horror movies when she isn't on tour.
What I’m Thinking About - When You're Called
“The fundamental question, in the beginning, is, ‘Why you?’ The reason ‘why’ was ’cause, nobody else would. So literally anybody could, right? Because the alternative is no one.” -Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Knocking Down the House
All the best, and remember, tomorrow is Friday. :)
